what COE do you use? i'm using 104 and lately it's been striking muddy...what makes that happen? i like these...my swirls look like demented boogers.

I use moretti (104 i believe). The units of that are micro-inch/inch*degree celsius, or micro-strain/degree celsius.

Muddy color can be from a sooty flame or from too hot of a flame burning out your colors. If you're using an oxy-propane torch, that latter is more likely. Just try to keep sensitive colors (opaque green i think is sensitive sometimes) to a moderate temperature.

too hot a flame? can you get that hot with a hothead and regular ole coleman propane? *scratches head*

OH! bead release! i'm using this generic blue stuff i got with my kit, and even double dipped, it's crap. what kind do you use and how does it work? i'm past ready to launch it through the window.

If you're using a hot head, the muddy color is from a sooty flame. If you turn the gas up too much that will happen.

I use gray bead release. It works well. The only time it doesn't work well is with new mandrells that have petroleum on them. That makes them sticky. They're packed with petroleum so they don't rust, but it comes off after a while of using them.
