why did they use swords?

I thought this was after feudal Japan.

It was just a symbol of officers,  for example British used a stick, or a walking stick,  while for  cavalry of all the world it was a still used weapon.

I doubt cavalry men used sticks

Not cavalry men, but infantry officers and NCO, if You  look for "officers stick" in google image you'll see what I mean.
During ww1 all the cavalry has issued swords, except australian light cavalry,  and it wasn't a mere logistical problem, they weren't trained to use swords, while they were trained to shoot from horseback, and sometimes light cavalry still used spears, often when it convoyed the POWs.

why?

I thought swords were obsolete.

You're quite right, the fact is that cavalry was obsolete,
cavalry was used only on the eastern front, where the trenches were not continuous and in Palestine, cavalry officers
were moved in artillery, in non-technical roles.

The last cavalry charge took place in Russia, in Isbuscenskij, during WW2.  when it was made by the Italian of the Savoia Cavalleria regiment, with sabers and grenades
