*NERD MODE ENGAGED*

The A-wings we see in Return of the Jedi, yes. HOWEVAH: Those were a new design concieved of by Jan Dodonna and Walex Blissex. The fighters we see in Rebels are colloquially called "A-wings", but their production name is the R-22 Spearhead, which didn't have near as much speed as the Dodonna-Blissex RZ-1 A-wing. The Spearhead's speed and maneuverability were comparable to the Z-95 Headhunter, but with limited firepower (no warhead launchers) and shields. The Incom T-65 X-Wing was larger and less maneuberable than the Spearhead, but had a comparable top speed, vastly superior shielding, twice as many laser cannons and a pair of torpedo launchers to boot. So while the RZ-1 A-wing was intended to replace the X-wing as a space superiority fighter, the X-wing is meant to replace the old R-22 model of A-wing.

I kinda see the r-22 like the Allison-Engined P-51A while the RZ-1 is the P-51B-D with the Meriln Engine - the latter far exceeds the former even though they are technically the same aircraft.

Well...I'd not have chosen A-Wings myself. But I'm not consulted on these things LOL

Neither would I. Always preferred the X-wing over the A-wing.

I love the Y-wings myself. I have a thing for the underdogs

Nothing wrong with the wishbones. Slow? Maybe. But they can take a beating and unlike the B-wings, it's not a chore to hit anything with the lasers/ion cannons. And they've got a much smaller profile to hit than the B-wings as well.

But then, you speak to an irredeemable X-wing jockey.

... Frick. Now I have to draw X-wing pilots.
