I can't say I expected any less. Meiji was the first emperor in a long time to claim what rightfully belongs to an emperor of Japan. The outcome was modernization and a surge in exports. It is quite natural that Japanese would do their best to keep anything that has a the Meiji name on it, as you say, "in an astonishingly good condition".

Of course, Meiji also enforced the strictest censorship in Japan's history. And gradually warmed up to the idea of Christianity not being totally illegal and punishable by death.
