Yanno, the Cretaceous mass extinction that killed the dinosaurs wasn't the worst of the big five mass extinctions.  The Permian mass extinction 250 million years ago was far more devastating.  It's actually often referred to as The Great Dying.  Upwards of 90% of all life on Earth was wiped out, and there seems to have been very little left alive at all when it was over.
