I agree with you but also, I think Pan's Labyrinth was built to be kind "rustic" or old school style of "horror/fantasy" as we saw in many movies of 80's like "Never Ending Story", "Legend" (how I love this one), kinda... "homemade". I am picky regarding technology in movies, I can notice perfection or imperfection in small details, yet I don't miss this in Pan's... because seemed that the story matched with the technology. No need to be better at that time and, imo, I don't think should be better than that these days (this means, Pan's... is a movie that should never be redone/rebooted again). It's different when I see "Lord of the Rings", although they had great technology on those days (and they created few more new effects to cinematic universe), when I watch again, some poorly done effects (trying to be great), really bother me. Specially in lights and chroma key work.

Yes i think the same thing! Many actual movies are all cold tecnology without substance. The reason is because the market require "one" movie each day and so the same director create 1000 movies....and so by by quality!
but luck there are exceptions, to remember something of relative recent "fantastic beasts and where to find them" wow the world inside the suitcase!
The tecnology in the right hands help a lot to create things before impossibles...and today when we see a movie, is impossible at 100% recognize fantasy from reality, im talking about the section mattepainting www.pluralsight.com/content/pl…

The problem of all old movies......redone/rebooted again 1000 times and all failed......this isn't linked to the tecnology but to 10000 factors! The first Alien for example no one has been able to create
something able to overcome it and not because there isn't the tecnology, but because the first was an astral combination of 100000000 aspects...This mean that movie was and is unique.... SO, The tecnology don't is able to recreate those original 100000000 aspects or if you prefear the same alchemy! the same speach is valid for many others old movies or the same Pan.
