I followed the steps up to step .... 1. I created the shape, but when I closed it, it didn't automatically fill. Why is that?

Are you sure that the pen tool is set to 'shape layers'? It's possible that you already found a solution to your problem, if not, please take a screencap and link it to me 
Maybe when I see the whole window I'll be able to tell where the problem lies.

I just restarted the program and it seemed to work fine... That and I slapped it but oh well.
