My first idea was a spinning compass. The idea of having a tool to find the way, yet still being lost, had great appeal to me.
As the image developed, I added elements to reinforce the sense of confusion, danger, and despair.

I really like it when an artist tells the back story to their art work its cool !!!
Agreed! it irks me when artists produce a great work but leave no description - you're left wondering what the message is. But this is absolutely fantastic, the calmness of he's face amidst the chaos and distraction of the seas while he tries to focus on a direction (or find a direction). Wouldn't have gotten that if the author hadn't taken the time to reveal he's mind - i would've just thought 'Cool aqua man' and moved on
