Nails weren't weak. It has been proved any other ship would have been damaged by hitting an iceberg at full speed. The only weakness of this ship was her size, which made her harder to control and turn.
The ship's fate was sealed when they decided to make it sail at full speed at night, knowing they were surrounded by ice. Big, big mistake.
