He does make you think about Indian (and other) animal-human hybrid deities. But the cool thing is the we misinterpret his appearance; he doesn't have elephantine features, it just seems that way.
Chaugnar Faugn doesn't look like an elephant, elephants look like Chaugnar Faugn. Because they're descended from him.
