So, it looks like this "World of Light" is going to combine Event Matches with a story mode, and the spirits are trophies and customization all rolled into one. (At least I hope we still get the little tidbits with the spirits, like we did with trophies.)
Weird that assist trophies were derived from trophies, but now they're gone. 
Yeah, that's why I didn't quite buy the rumors that collectible trophies weren't returning. (Speaking of which, strange to thing that it was the Box Theory, of all things, that panned out.)
