The use of lighting here brings out the snail on the rail. My eyes then follow the steadily blurrying rail downward, and I get a sense of the long journey he has made to come up. Though blurred the shape of the rail remains discernible. The colors also fit the subject, bleak yet warm, kind of sedate and slow. The borders are also not too strong (as perhaps with the boat shot) but frame the shot just right. Definite improvement in the areas mentioned when compared with your 'Blue Hole'.
