I find though that i often think my work doesn't look like the reference, which i get really depressed about. Maybe it's because you look at the image for so long you become unsure? Then again i'm very critical of my work

That could be the reason, too. I did look at the ref image for hours and hours while doing this. Even now I look at the photo and just don't see it, lol
