No, no, that's not what I said. If someone does fanart AND original art, they are most certainly an artist!
I'm referring to people who *literally* do NOTHING but fanart. No original art whatsoever. That's what I'm talking about. People who have an even balance of both fanart and original art are certainly benefiting from that balance of learning multiple styles and techniques.
And yes, I know what doujins are, I own a few. It kind of seems that no one here understands my point or where I'm coming from with this.
If you do original art AND balance it with fanart, doing multiple styles, then that is creative, that makes you an artist. Learning to create in different ways.
If you do not do ANY original art whatsoever, and produce exclusively fanart, that's not creative, and you aren't learning. All you're doing at that point is reproducing someone else's characters that THEY worked hard to create.
And what's more, I never said fanart wasn't art, I said it wasn't creative. I certainly do believe that fanart is an art form, and some of it is handled quite beautifully; I just think that conceptually, it's weak. Other than the execution of the piece, there are really no creative decisions the fanartist has to make: they know what the character looks like, they know what colours they are, and they know how the creator depicts them.
I think fanart is art, but original work will always be superior in my opinion.
