Just to let you know, fanart is an excuse to exercise your artistic skills and it gives you a chance to grow them too. We all need practice.

I can agree with that.
I don't hate fanart, in fact I do practice (or try to) with it occasionally, what I don't like is when people call themselves artists and do nothing BUT fanart.

That's pretty much it. The last time I tried to make that point everyone jumped on my ass and said I was trying to "dictate" what other people could and couldn't do with their skills. God forbid I expect variety out of someone who calls themself an artist!
But really, I always have been, and always will be more impressed by people who have the creative energy to imagine things of their own design and the courage to put their own ideas out there, than by people who are essentially human copy machines. For me being an artist means being able to work with a variety of ideas, so the ideal (in my opinion) is someone who does both fanart and original work.

So if someone who does their own original art AND fanart at the same time are not artists? Thanks.
But then again, I need to remember this is just your opinion and it's not a fact. We all are entitled to our own opinions, even if they aren't' based on facts. There are people in Japan that do doujinshi manga (which is actually licensed official comic books where they have permission to use already existing characters from other series and put them in their own storyline). I guess that's not art either.

No, no, that's not what I said. If someone does fanart AND original art, they are most certainly an artist!
I'm referring to people who *literally* do NOTHING but fanart. No original art whatsoever. That's what I'm talking about. People who have an even balance of both fanart and original art are certainly benefiting from that balance of learning multiple styles and techniques.
And yes, I know what doujins are, I own a few. It kind of seems that no one here understands my point or where I'm coming from with this.
If you do original art AND balance it with fanart, doing multiple styles, then that is creative, that makes you an artist. Learning to create in different ways.
If you do not do ANY original art whatsoever, and produce exclusively fanart, that's not creative, and you aren't learning. All you're doing at that point is reproducing someone else's characters that THEY worked hard to create.
And what's more, I never said fanart wasn't art, I said it wasn't creative. I certainly do believe that fanart is an art form, and some of it is handled quite beautifully; I just think that conceptually, it's weak. Other than the execution of the piece, there are really no creative decisions the fanartist has to make: they know what the character looks like, they know what colours they are, and they know how the creator depicts them.
I think fanart is art, but original work will always be superior in my opinion.

This is a bit funny XD i have drawn fanart of Vampire knight since 2010 and my style and talent has only Grown. Many artists start with fanart and end with their own charakters after a few years. Drawing fanart of varios manga artist help you learn different styles. I have my original characters, and i draw fanart. I prefer fanart so i can become better at drawing. You have no idea how mutch fanart artists practice, mabye they have original charakters that they are afraid/too shy of posting on DA?

I do see what you`re saying. With fanart, you already know what the character looks like, but with original art, you have to plan several things out.

Exactly! Like I said, I enjoy fanart, especially when it's done really nicely/with an adept skill level, but at the same time, I think original art is grossly under-appreciated.
My view behind this is that I see so many talented artists on here (and elsewhere) who pour their hearts and souls into writing amazing stories, spend years creating characters of their own design and hour upon hour polishing backstories and refining their styles, only to end up being their own #1 fans. While someone who cranks out fanart gets millions of views, fawning comments and DDs. I hardly find that fair.
I've actually been saying for YEARS now that what dA needs to do is create a sister site specifically for fan artists.

That is just cruel! You cant trow someone out of DA for what they are drawing!! D: have it come to your mind that we might enjoy original artists art too? Like humon? Apofiss? JenniferHealy?

That we have to move becourse you dont thik of us as artists is wrong. Even how many pretty words you hide it in.

I see your points and view.
