That's pretty much it. The last time I tried to make that point everyone jumped on my ass and said I was trying to "dictate" what other people could and couldn't do with their skills. God forbid I expect variety out of someone who calls themself an artist!
But really, I always have been, and always will be more impressed by people who have the creative energy to imagine things of their own design and the courage to put their own ideas out there, than by people who are essentially human copy machines. For me being an artist means being able to work with a variety of ideas, so the ideal (in my opinion) is someone who does both fanart and original work.
