Hm, it's kind of complicated. I create a base layer for almost every color (that includes every shaded color) and then I turn each base layer (which is really its own shape) into a kind of mask that operates on transparency. Within that mask, I do the detailed shading, often with gradients. It's really hard to explain and I'm sure that hardly makes sense, but you're closer than anyone else I've ever head trying to guess my process! ;D

I think I understand the process. 
I've already used Illustrator for illustration pics, and I think I'll probably use the same process to have this result.
It would be very interesting to see a tutorial from you. I cant wait to see it. That will be an occasion to experiment an other kind of color process.
