I would... highly recommend playing them in order
It's not mandatory, but the story will make more sense, and you can develop the characters faster. If you just grab disk 2 in the G.U. series, without playing the first disk, Haseo (the main character you play as) will be at a pretty low level... Makes going through the game a heck of a lot harder.
Same if you grab the third disk without touching disks 1 and 2.
Thought is you wanna just cut to the end, you get to add Azure Kite to your party that much faster
