Overall.... it's usually the facings (lapells and cuffs and such) People tend to make them wider, which is correct for the Seven Years War, but incorrect for the American Revolution. The other thing is sashes (no offence). People seem to use the over-the-shoulder sashes a lot more than they were. Waist shashes were the most commonly done. You don't see many over the shoulder sashes until you hit the General ranks. Brigadier General was a rose color, Major General was crimson, and Lieutenent General (which there was only one of) was a light blue. Everyone else had red waist sashes, unless their uniform called for something different or none at all.

That's interesting about the facings. One thing I've always found interesting about 18th century facings, is that they parallel how, in the 20th century, lapels got very wide in the 1920s and '30s, to become really narrow by the early '60s. When watching 18th century costume movies, I always keep an eye on the facing/cuff size on the coats to see if it matches up with the decade. Some films get it right, but a lot of films get it wrong. Silly costumers! ("Farinelli" is particularly awful for mistakes like that. It's set in the 1730s, but the main character walks around in 1780s suits. AND he has a mullet. Ugh!)

Anyway, thanks for the heads up on the sash- I'll be sure to remember that now! :)

No problem.
The movie Amadeus is actually fairly accurate with it's fashion and costumes, not so much with it's history, but what's new there right?
Anyway, glad I could be of assistance. Feel free to look me up if you have any other questions.

Actually, as much as I love "Amadeus," the costumes aren't that good. :iconseitou: wrote up a great review of the movie here: [link]

HA HA, ok. I know the wigs were horrible, i mean I doubt he wore a bright pink one. I didn't know the costumes were all that horrible, though Austrian society isn't exactly my area of expertese, lol. My girlfriend is in love with that movie, so we watch it fairly often.

Well, Viennese town styles wouldn't have been so different from what they wore in Paris and London. "Amadeus" is an amazing movie, but Seitou is right that the costuming leaves something to be desired. (I love her line about Stanzi's robe a la francaise looking like someone stapled her grandmother's old curtains to an anglaise... LOL!) Ah well. If you can believe it, the costuming in Milos Forman's other 18th cent. costume drama, "Valmont," is far worse.

Since we've been talking about it, I think I'm going to watch "Amadeus" again... I love Jeffrey Jones as the emperor! :)

Yeah, my girlfriend loves that movie! I mean when she watches it she isn't watching movie she's attending mass, lol.
She's a huge music geek though and is into it for the music and the Mozart history, rather than the fashion or anything else.
Yes I like the Emperor also, he's fun.
So I hope you had fun watching it. :)
