I'm not really an expert on the topic, but you don't have to pay to copyright something. As soon as you make the idea it's pretty much yours (it helps to be able to prove you were the origin of the idea), but you can't really copyright the idea of an existing animal, I'm sure. I bet there are limits to what one can copyright in this field (eg. photos of nature can't be copyrighted) but I don't know what they could be o3o;
I mean, a dog made of glass is sorta kinda "original" but at the same time not really, obviously. But rules about this kind of thing would've been hard to make, I'd say. They certainly exist, though. Maybe the answer is just one Google search away~
