I usually use the pencil and curving tool.
Then I edit with Paint Tool Sai and Gimp.
Then I edit with Paint Tool Sai and Gimp.
Practice as often as possible using the pencil tool and brush tool 
I suggest drawing on paper first, then uploading the picture onto your pc and tracing over it/ coloring it. Then eventually, when you feel ready to give freehand a shot, draw without drawing on paper.
That way when you draw using the pencil/ brush tool your hand will be less shaky, the lines will be smoother, and you'll feel more used to drawing with a mouse to the point where it just feels natural.
