All I can tell you is try things out.  When I first started out trying to make my basing better, I took several flat rectangles and tried different things.  I took ideas I had heard about or seen elsewhere and tried to recreate it with my own touch.  I found testing it out on something that you don't have to keep or worrying about ruining helps a lot.  You use a bit of basing material to work on them, but in the end you can learn a lot.  I hope I helped a little bit, and if you come up with any ideas or questions, just ask away.  I am more than happy to talk shop!

Agreed! It's been so long since I've had any kind of motivation to paint the pile unpainted plastic and metal I've got, much less base them so I'm not much of a conversationalist for this >.< still love the quality of your basing.

I understand the pile of unpainted minis, but remember he who has the most unpainted lead when he dies, wins.
