All I can tell you is try things out. When I first started out trying to make my basing better, I took several flat rectangles and tried different things. I took ideas I had heard about or seen elsewhere and tried to recreate it with my own touch. I found testing it out on something that you don't have to keep or worrying about ruining helps a lot. You use a bit of basing material to work on them, but in the end you can learn a lot. I hope I helped a little bit, and if you come up with any ideas or questions, just ask away.
