thank you. to answer your question.. I usualy work with dull muddy colors in the begining, when the shape starts to take.. well, shape , I apply a few wide strokes of complementary colors as overlay and see what happens. in the end i fiddle a bit with curves to balance the whole thing. thats it I guess..

So you go straight to color after building the underpainting?

after I know where things will be. looks better when each stroke has its own color value, rather than coloring it in the end
