I noticed the group doesn't have any normal ways of joining without an invite so here's a tutorial on how to fix that.

As for why I left as an Admin...well I'm an admin of to many groups as it is and it makes it when someone wants to invite me as an admin of another group rather annoying so I decided to lessen the amount of groups I'm apart of as an admin.
Might help to make it so people can join as members rather than admins.

I tried to follow your advice, since I find it a good idea.
Apparently, since I'm listed as contributor, I can enter the admin area, but looks like I don't have full power for what you suggest, since I can't find the button you highlighted.

But it's fine now I'm able to join as a member finally. 
Ah I see, yeah that'll happen, only the boss of the group would actually be able to do it.
I think he can permit others too this option. Just, here is not yet made available
