Flash, this is Laithoron from the Paizo forums. Being as you are on the opposite side of the world from me, I was wondering if you had any advice on a small problem I'm having...

Basically, I'd like to find a PbP game, but I work 3rd shift in the USA. As such, games are either full by the time I find them or I'd be awake at the wrong time for the groups I've seen. Just wondering if you have any ideas that might help me.

Thanks!

Hey Laithoron :)

Unfortunately the best advice I can offer on the front of PbPs filling up before you get to them is simply just keep looking. There have been a number of my PbPs that I have gotten through other PbPs or continuations from defunct ones, but the ones I stumbled into were just that. I happened to catch them before they were full. When you are in the market for a PbP you have to keep checking the Gamer Connection Forum at least daily, if not every chance you get. Eventually you'll find one that's not full; that's how I got most of mine.
On the matter of being awake in the wrong times for the group, I have never found that to be a huge problem. Most PbPs will scream along at first, but then they will slow down to a more managable pace after a week or 3. So for the short term you may find yourself swamped by posts that came while you were asleep, but after a while you'll be able to add your Posts in without any drama or disruption to a storyline.

Sorry I couldn't be more help, but feel free to ask more questions if you hae them, I'm only too happy to be of assistance. :)

Hey Flash,

Thanks for the advice. I've pretty much been checking the Gamer Connection forum every couple hours while at work for the past couple weeks now.

As for the pacing, I didn't consider the slow-down factor. TBH, the only PbPs I've even observed is the one that Calix is running for you, Jenny, and the rest. It looks like a lot of fun particularly since the only games I've ever NOT DM'd tend to fall apart rather quickly and I'm left having to run the show again. *laughs*

Anyhooo, thanks for the prompt reply. I'll keep at it! :)

Calix's game has actaully kept a lot of pace, but that doesn't happen too often unless you get either a really good game/GM or players who are new and/or excited.

One thing I've noticed with new PbPs starting up is that sometimes there will be nothing for some time and then all of a sudden you'll get a few start up all at once.

I've had a fair few PbPs die off, so I hear ya there. Of my 34 Aliases, 31 are PbP Characters (with 2 being for a Skype game I was attempting and one my current Pen & Paper Character). Of those 31, only 6 PbPs are still active, with one about to start next week and 2 or 3 on hiatus. All of the others have folded at some point, some shortly after starting (like the one that only just died this week) and others just petered out after a longer period.

If you get the chance, take a look at any of Patrick Curtin's games. They are some of the longest still active (along with Heathy's Saltmarsh game I think). I'm in two of his, Chronicles of the Silver Rose and Tales from the City of Opal, both great fun and definately my favourites (apart from Z-Day which is on hiatus at the moment, but is the best PbP I've played in; that one was just pure luck I happened to be on to snag it as well).

Good Luck with your hunting and I hope to game with you in a PbP sometime. :)
