For my bird photos, I use a Nikon D2X Camera and a Nikon 600mm or 200-400mm lens. If you want to improve your success rate at bird images, I usually recommend a lens of at least 400mm. I started shooting birds with a Sigma 400mm f5.6 APO lens, and I never regretted it. It's a very sharp lens and very reasonably priced. It's also important to get yourself completely concealed when you're shooting so that the birds can't see you. They'll get a lot closer to you that way. I noticed that you're from the Memphis area. I'm just down the river a bit in Vicksburg, Mississippi, so it's likely that we'll see a lot of the same birds. If I can give you any more help, just Note me.

Yeah, I pretty much figured what I'm going to need is a longer lens with an image stabilizer. The one I've got now is just a Quantaray 75-300mm. I've made do with it fairly well, but it was a pretty inexpensive lens, and it has some flaws. Unfortunately, I'm gonna have to stick with it for awhile, lenses are pretty expensive.

On the upside, I can just sit in my backyard in a lawn chair, and the birds don't really seem to be bothered by me at all, they're more interested in the feeders I've got. ;) Plus I'm out there so much I think they're just used to me by now.

Thanks again for your help, I'm sure I'll call on you again for more. :D
