I am so sorry to hear this, Marilyn! I know the xray and scope will help diagnose the problem. I must agree with others who have suggested it is GERD. I know you are taking meds, but you still have to be careful of what you eat, don't lay down flat, try to bend over as little as possible, etc...  I think it may be esophageal spasms, which is another frequent complaint associated with GERD. It feels like a heart attack - severe pain like bands tightening across your chest. I have it, and the first time it happened, I went to the hospital thinking I was having a heart attack. I still get it occasionally, usually at night, and it comes as a sudden surprise which wakes me up. I have discovered that quickly drinking warm water will stop the spasms.
